Initially launched as ‘TheFacebook’, the platform was limited to Harvard University students. It quickly expanded to other Ivy League schools and eventually opened up to the general public. The early success of Facebook was largely due to its clean interface, real-name policy, and simple yet effective way to connect with friends and share updates. Over time, Facebook added features such as the News Feed, Groups, Pages, and Messenger, transforming it into a comprehensive social ecosystem. Each addition encouraged more user engagement, and the platform’s stickiness grew with every update.
One of the biggest game-changers for Facebook was the introduction of the News Feed in 2006. This feature fundamentally changed how users interacted with content and with each other. Instead of visiting friends’ profiles individually, users could now see a dynamic, personalized stream of updates, photos, and interactions. While initially controversial due to privacy concerns, the News Feed quickly became central to Facebook’s user experience and remains one of its most defining features. It also paved the way for algorithm-driven content delivery, which would become central to digital platforms.
